This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.

Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping strategy.
But then, you remember that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
In the end, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

Worst Day Ever
It all started with my case of bedhead hair. I couldn't make it to look right. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was extremely late for a very important appointment.
I flustered. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a true disaster.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
